If you are getting ready to take on a painting project, there are several things that you are going to have to consider before getting started. Not only will you need to choose the right color and finish, but you will also need to know the difference between interior and exterior paint. While the differences aren’t huge, they are big enough that you wouldn’t want to use them in the wrong setting. Jeff the Painter is here to talk about the differences between paints so that you can choose the right one for your home.
Latex VS Oil-Based Paint
It is important that you understand what type of paint you are using beyond whether or not it was interior or exterior paint, you need to know what solvents are in it. For instance, latex paint is made with a water-based solvent and oil paint is made using mineral spirits as the solvent. Latex paint is used by many because it is easier to use as well as clean up afterwards.
Interior Paint
Interior paint is made up of different resins that exterior paint is. For the most part, interior paint is made with little to no VOCs or volatile organic compounds. These VOCs are found in the air when you’re painting and can be a danger to your health when you are in a small space and breathing them for long periods of time. This is why interior paint is made without or with very little VOCs. Interior paint is also formulated to withstand everyday wear and tear like scuffs and other marks.
Exterior Paint
Exterior paint needs to be much more resistant to the forces of mother nature. Things like sun, wind and heavy moisture can take a toll on paint. Exterior paint does contain more VOCs though which makes them a poor choice for interior surfaces. When you apply the first coat of exterior paint, it is important that you give the paint a full 48 hours to dry before applying the second coat or you won’t get the finished product you are looking for.
Paint You Can Use Inside & Outside?
There are some paints that are formulated to be both interior and exterior paint. While they claim to be able to be used both inside and outside, you should make sure that there aren’t a high number of VOCs in them before using them inside. Additionally, some of them may not be as durable for outdoor use when they are made for both surfaces. Sometimes, you may find that you are better off choosing one or the other depending on where you will be painting rather than using a hybrid.
