What are the Basic Ingredients of Paint?
There are four basic components to interior and exterior paint, which include pigments, resin, solvents, and additives.
Pigments: By giving paint their color, pigment plays an important role in paint. When it comes to pigment material sources, they are typically from minerals, animals, plants, or synthetic production.
Resin: In the form of silicone, epoxy, or acrylic, paint requires resin. For exterior paints to withstand outdoor elements, resin provides strength.
Solvents: Either from oil- or water-based materials a paint consists of base or solvent. While water-based paints work on the interior and exterior, oil-based paints are better suited for exterior paint jobs.
Additives: The appearance and performance of the paint is usually improved with paint additives. To make the paint more durable, waterproof, or UV resistant, additives offer special characteristics.
Differences Between Exterior & Interior Paint
Let us take a look at how these two types differ now that you understand the basics of paint.
1) Pigment Type. Without any harsh chemicals, interior paints use organic-based pigments. These paints provide a safe indoor environment and not produce harmful odors. In order to protect the paint from fading, exterior paints use harsh chemicals and non-organic pigments in contrast.
2) Special Additives. They require fewer additives since interior paints do not have to withstand tough environments. To prevent chipping, peeling, and cracking, exterior paints include special additives. In order protect exterior paint from mold, mildew, and algae, there are others, such as mildewcides.
3) Binding Resin. How well paint adheres to a surface, binding resin determines. As it offers the strongest bond and durability, exterior paints use acrylic resin. For interior paints, the difference between interior and exterior paint involves the epoxy or silicone resin used. Typically, used for interior paints, the difference between interior and exterior paint involves the epoxy or silicone resin.
4) Resistance to Scratch. Good scratch resistance is offered with good interior and exterior paints. Scuffs, scratches, dings, and tough scrubbing can be withstood in interior latex paint. Exterior paint offers more overall scratch resistance than interior paint, on the other hand.
5) Durability. Years of abuse from weather-resistant can be better protected by good exterior paint. When it comes into contact with twigs, bugs, or debris, the paint will not easily chip. Exterior paint provides more durability than interior paint in most cases.
