Is the exterior of your home in need of a serious paint job? If the outside of your home looks old and weathered down, it may be time to consider repainting the outside of your home. A new coat of paint can renew your home’s appearance greatly. However for those who have never had to paint the entire exterior of their home, it helps to know how to properly prepare. Jeff the Painter will share how to prepare your home’s exterior for an easier and quicker paint job.
Do You have to Sand Exterior Walls Before Painting? Should I Power Wash House First?
Step 1: The first thing before you begin any paint job is to prepare not only your home but yourself. Painting is a very messy job and even professional painters will find paint on their clothes and hair. They even wear protective eye wear especially when working outside and in high places. Before you begin painting, have a good pair of eye protectors that will protect your eyes from paint, dirt and any other debris that could affect your eyes. Additionally wear some clothes you don’t mind getting a little bit of paint on.
Step 2: Now let’s prepare the outside of your home to be painted. Whether you’re doing one wall or the whole house, you will first want to wash all of the dirt off of it. Make sure to wash away of all the dirt. This will help so that the paint goes on cleaner and properly. Some people will rent or use a pressure washer if they have one to clean the outside of their home more quickly and efficiently. However, you can still accomplish the same clean results with a regular garden hose. It may just take some more time. However, if your home appears to have mold, mildew or fungus growth on it, you may want to rent a pressure washer and use a cleaning solution to kill these outdoor microbes.
Step 3: If the older paint on the wall or on the wood paneling or trimming has began to flake off or chip away, your next step will to be to use a stripper and scrape it off. For homes with the wooden under ledge of the roofing, this may also need to be sanded down and repainted as well. After you have prepared the wooden areas on the outside of your home, next seal any cracks or gaps that may have occurred. Make sure to use paintable exterior caulking glue for longer and better results.
Step 4: After the outside of the walls have been cleaned, sanded down, and repaired, your last and final step is covering windows and masking off the edge of the areas you don’t wish to get paint on. You can use regular masking tape and cut pieces of the plastic painter’s cloth for windows and other larger areas you want to keep access paint off of. Now you can begin painting the outside of the home.
