When choosing the exterior color of your home, you will want to ensure you do not invest in a major mistake. There is a lot to consider when choosing a paint color for your home’s exterior. Not only will the color of the paint need to please you, but the right color can add value to a home and increase its curbside appeal. The right paint color can also help keep your home cooler in the summer and even deter pests. Jeff the Painter would like to share a few considerations and tips when picking the color of your home’s exterior paint.
Does an HOA Restrict Paint Colors?
When your home needs to be repainted, and you live in an HOA community, you will first need to see what the regulations are regarding what color you can paint your home. Yes, some HOA’s can have control over what colors are allowed in the community. Even worse, some HOA’s may even control your home’s entire color and paint scheme. You will need to go over your HOA informative documents and see if there are any regulations as to what colors you can paint your home.
Test Exterior Paint Samples
Some people will go online and begin looking up paint color and color schemes. If you do, do not print out the color paint as they will not look anything like the paint you receive. For the best and most accurate paint color samples, get your paint samples from a hardware or your local paint store. When comparing your paint color, don’t just do it once. In fact, you will want to see the color in different light, or during different times of the day. You will want to test the paint sample in the morning, in the failing light, and again at night. Often colors will change depending on the different time of the day. Make sure you like the color you choose during the different time of the day.
Choose a Complete Exterior Painting Color Scheme
When painting the outside of your home, often two colors are used: one for the primary color and the second for the accent color. When deciding on what color to paint your home, make sure you get a complementary accent color to ensure your home stands out and looks great. You do not want to make a last minute decision on what color to use on the accent color for your home’s exterior. Make sure not to forget to look at accent colors when picking your primary color.
Painting Other Features & Structures
When painting the outside of your home, you not only want the house to shine but other features and structures on the property as well. For example, if there is a deck, shed, detached garage, or fence you may want to have them painted at the same time. When you only paint the home, these other elements on the property tend to look worse. To ensure everything looks great, you will want to have them painted as well. This means you will want to pick a paint color theme that will look great on a fence, deck, and other structures.
