Many people take on the exterior painting project as a weekend project they do themselves. When it comes to any painting project however, there is a lot of prep work that needs to be done before the surface sees a drop of new paint. Today, we at Jeff the Painter would like to stress the prepping steps when you undertake the exterior painting project.
Select a Day with the Right Weather Conditions
Consider keeping a close eye on the weather forecast on the days leading up to your paint job since weather can be somewhat unpredictable. The moisture will start to blister, ruining any work started, and there are a variety of reasons why you shouldn’t paint in the rain. Rain can present difficult and dangerous working conditions. Make sure there is no precipitation in sight on the day, and for at least 3 days after. Additionally, to prevent fading and cracks, avoid painting in the direct sun as well. Paint the west-facing side of their home in the morning and the east later in the day. When painting your home, temperature is also an important consideration. In temperatures between 60° and 85°F with little to no wind is when painting is best. Windy conditions can cause it to dry too quickly, resulting in cracking, and peeling. If possible, choose a day with humidity ranging from 40% to 70%.
With a Pressure Washer, Clean Home’s Exterior
You want to make sure you’re painting on a clean and smooth surface before you start painting. This ensures you get the best coverage possible. Pressure washing your home will remove any dirt, residue, and peeling paint from the surface, ensuring it doesn’t get painted over with the new coat of paint.
Scrape Off Loose Paint and Damaged Surfaces Need to be Repaired. After a thorough assessment of the home’s exterior, set off to make any repairs to damaged areas. Remove paint that appears to be flaking with a scraping tool. You can use a spackle knife and apply filler or caulk if you find cracks and holes around doors and windows. Using sanding paper or a sanding block to get a smooth surface, lightly sand the surface once the exterior is completely dry.
Protect Your Gardens, Lawns & Decks from Paint
There is a high risk of getting paint on bushes, flowerbeds, lawns, and other outdoor structures, so use drop cloths to cover and protect anything that might get paint on it.
Prime Before Exterior Painting
You get a more consistent look to the paint job by providing an adhesive surface using primer. Especially in areas with high humidity and moisture, failing to prime your exterior before slapping on fresh paint can result in peeling paint. Because paint can easily fade when wiped or cleaned, cleaning can be more difficult as well.
Choose the Right Paint
Color is not the only thing you need to consider when choosing paint. Ensure you select a paint that is designed for outdoor use and is cohesive to your environment. You also want a paint that is durable and can withstand different weather conditions. Consider drying times and clean-up when making this choice as well.
