When you are building a home, there has been a recent disaster such as a flood or fire or you are repairing wall damage from other causes; you may need to install fresh drywall. Once the drywall is up and the skim coating is completed, the last step before painting is applying the wall’s texture. When you have to replace your walls and need a fresh texture put on your wall, you have the opportunity to change the type of texture you put on your walls previously. Jeff the Painter will share the different types of wall and ceiling textures you can choose to coat your drywall.
Smooth Drywall Texture
A smooth texture is the simplest and most common finish that you see on drywall. It involves applying joint compound or other similar material to the drywall seams and screw holes to create a flat, smooth surface. This finish is ideal for rooms that will be painted with a glossy finish, as it reflects light evenly and doesn’t show imperfections easily. A smooth texture is also ideal if you want to put up wall paper.
Orange Peel Texture
Orange peel is a common texture that is achieved by spraying a mixture of joint compound and water onto the drywall and then lightly flattening it with a drywall knife or trowel. The resulting texture resembles the surface of an orange peel. Orange peel is a great option if the drywall is full of imperfections.
Knockdown Texture
A knockdown texture involves spraying a mixture of joint compound and water onto the drywall and then flattening it with a trowel similar to orange peel. However, the sprayer tool is used to create small peaks and ridges in the texture. They are then knocked down or flattened with a trowel to create a mottled, irregular finish. This texture can be customized to create a range of effects, from subtle to dramatic textures.
Popcorn Texture
Popcorn texture is done by spraying a mixture of joint compound onto the drywall by using a special hopper gun to create a highly textured surface. The texture resembles small popcorn or cottage cheese and is highly effective at hiding imperfections in the drywall. However, it is less popular in modern homes and commercial buildings due to its dated appearance. Popcorn texture is most often used on the ceilings.
Skip Trowel Texture
Skip trowel is a texture that involves using a trowel to create a subtle and irregular pattern on the surface of the drywall. This texture is often used in homes and commercial buildings that have a more traditional or rustic style interior and or exterior design.
Swirl Texture
A swirl texture uses a brush or other tool to create a circular pattern on the drywall’s surface. The pattern can be customized to create a wide range of effects, from subtle swirls to bigger, more dramatic swirls. This texture is often used in homes and commercial buildings that want to have an artistic or playful style.
Stomp Texture
A stomp texture uses a tool called a stomp brush to create a rough and or irregular pattern on the surface of the drywall. Stomping the brush onto the wet joint compound creates small peaks and ridges to create an industrial style design.
